The Sandpiper.Appearing in our Kranzbach logo, this intelligent bird, the sandpiper, has been quite a mystery for our guests and friends. It was also subject of many interesting conversations. Being at home near rivers and creeks, this local bird was chosen to be our heraldic bird. It represents untouched nature in our enchanted valley, bird songs that announce a new day, and many more of the various experiences that you will be able to encounter during your stay. The "actitis hypoleucos" is on the list of endangered species. The bird grows to a size of 22cm with a wing span of approximately 40cm. Males and femals look alike; they are brownish with white belly feathers. Their habitat is near rivers and creeks, sometimes even lakes. They fly quite fast and steadily, and also swim and dive. If you listen carefully, you may hear their "heedeedeedee". With a little bit of luck, you may discover one of the rare sandpipers in our area - either on your hike to the Elmau alpine hut or during a bicycle ride to Lake Ferchen.
